"Stanzout grabs glory at the Bool"
An absolute gem of a ride by Danny Brereton was the icing on the cake in Stanzouts' victory in today's Wangoom Handicap at Warrnambool. It was the perfect ground saving ride and it gave Colin his just reward for the time and patience he has put into getting his favourite grey back to big race winning form.
After beginning a little slowly Danny Brereton settled off the speed as he did in a previous ride in the grey's return to racing at Sale but as the approached the bend he cut the corner as others went wide looking for better going and quickly shot to the lead. Stanzout then kicked clear and the win was never in doubt as he drove strongly to the line.
It was a case of Déjà vu for Bocuse, who was a fast finishing second in the race last year and agian chased home the winner, the mare from Tassie I'm A Hussy ran on strongly to grab third.
Col had set Stanzout for the race following a strong second behind Orbit Express last start and set him for the Wangoom. He had tossed up going to Adelaide for the Goodwood HCP but is over the moon he chose today's race.
I will see how he pulls up after the run and will look at where to next over the next week or so. There are a few nice races up North during the Brisbane Carnival that could be on the agenda.
Stanzior makes it a Hat-Trick of Grey Winners for his Dam
The brilliant win by Stanzior in the 'EDWARD (TED) BULL FUNERAL SERVICES MAIDEN PLATE 1400M" at Cranbourne brought up a unique Hat-trick for his Dam" Stanza Grey". Stanzior is the younger half brother to Group winner "Stanzout" and the up and coming Stayer "Storm Woolf". All being bred by Colin, the unique fact is they are all greys.
I have had a lot to do with this family said Colin who trained the Dam to a six lengths win on a slow track at Bairnsdale and she was retired after a couple more starts due to a cracked pedal bone. Stanza Greys' Dam was a half sister to Vatican Lass, the Cardinal filly who won seven races, highlighted by a victory in the inaugural running of what is now the group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide. Keeping it all in the family Colin trained the Sire of Stanzior, The handy middle distance country cups horse "The Prior" also by Cardinal.
Ridden a treat by "Brian Park", "Stanzior" was given time to find his feet after jumping well from a wide gate. Settling about 10 lengths from the lead "Stanzior" who travelled 3-4 wide for most of the Journey. Approaching the home turn Stanzior moved up to the leaders and although fanning a little wide he soon lengthened and put paid to his rivals in the fashion of a good horse in the making. He is still learning the game said Colin and I think he will make a lovely horse next preparation.
